The Herb Book 
by John Lust, is the only book I will ever recommend to anyone who is serious about growing herbs. It is the most comprehensive book on herbs you will ever own. It is a nice compact paperback, and very likely available in discount bookstores or even on thrift store book shelves. In fact, every copy I ever bought was from a thrift store. Why are they available so cheaply? Because this is a serious book, not a picture book, you actually have to read this. Most people want pretty color photos to look at, and although there are illustrations, this is not a picture book. People who are serious about herbs know and love it. But don't just take my word for it, check out Amazon's user comments on this book.
